I know a lot of people like the convenience of using craigslist to sell something quickly and cheaply. The ability to just quickly meet someone at a public place and exchange that IPod Touch you no longer need (got an IPhone 4? ), for cash in hand is definitely appealing. But there are definitely some things to keep in mind. As always there are going to be people out there trying to run a scam on you.
I myself was recently targeted by one that almost got me, and I could definitely see how someone else could fall victim to it. Someone offered to buy my Ipod Touch but couldn’t pick it up in person. They were willing to pay extra for me to ship it to them; ok I can do that. They were going to make an immediate payment using a verified Paypal account. That’s cool too. I use Paypal all the time and am comfortable with them.
So I have someone ready to buy my item at the price I wanted, willing to pay immediately, and I didn’t even have to meet up with some stranger for those awkward exchanges. Looks like another satisfactory Craigslist exhange…until things got a little weird. For one the guys says that he is from Florida and couldn’t pick it up in person because of his work schedule. Why were you even looking for an IPod in Philadelphia then? On top of that, he doesn’t want me to ship it to him, but to his son for his birthday, who lives outside of the country. That’s where you lost me. Your verified Paypal account means nothing to me if I’m shipping to an unverified address which probably isn’t even listed on the Paypal account. I asked for the account it was going to come from, which he said I didn’t need and to just give him mine.
Needless to say I passed on this transaction, and if you come across something similar I would advise you to do so as well. Something tells me I would be getting a charge back on my Paypal account within a few days, by which time my IPod touch would be halfway across the world. When it comes to these kinds of transactions, it’s always best practice to trust your instincts. If it doesn’t seem legit, it probably isn’t.
Update: I proceeded to ignore the continued emails from this person, whose grammar got worse with each email. The next day I got an email from a guy in Maryland, looking through the Philadelphia Craigslist, who wanted me to ship it to his cousin, who lived outside of the country….
